The job: covering enough floor that the room reads as one piece
A rug is the only thing in a living room that is measured in feet and sold in a photograph. The photograph is always of a room larger than yours, which is why the 5 by 7 that looked generous online arrives and turns out to be an island in the middle of the floor with everything standing off it.

The job: putting light at the height a seated person needs it
A floor lamp is bought on how it looks standing up and used sitting down. Those are different heights. A seated adult’s eye is somewhere around 40 to 44 in off the floor, and where the bottom of the shade lands relative to that line decides whether you get light on a page or a bulb in your eye.
