The job: putting light at the height a seated person needs it

A floor lamp is bought on how it looks standing up and used sitting down. Those are different heights. A seated adult’s eye is somewhere around 40 to 44 in off the floor, and where the bottom of the shade lands relative to that line decides whether you get light on a page or a bulb in your eye.

Seven of these nine listings state an overall height, and they run from 60 to 72 in. Two of the three shelf lamps state no height at all, which means there is no way to place them on the comparison below.

Is a taller floor lamp better?

It is different, not better. A 72 in torchiere throws most of its light at the ceiling and lights the room by bounce. A 60 in lamp with a shade puts light beside a seated person and lights a page. Buying the tall one and expecting to read by it is the mistake this category produces most often.

Two of these listings give no height. Why list them?

Because they exist and people buy them. What we will not do is guess. A shelf column with no stated height cannot be compared against a 63 in lamp, so it is shown with the number missing rather than with a number invented for it.
