Room shape 5 of 5

Rental with Fixed Fixtures

In a rental the fixed things are fixed: the rod bracket is where it is, the outlets are where they are, and there is already a blind at the window. Sizing here is not about finding the ideal number, it is about finding which catalog size lands closest to a number somebody else chose.

This is the one room shape where 63 in curtains occasionally make sense, because a rod mounted on the frame in an 8 ft room can genuinely sit low enough for them.

It is also the room where the wall question is loudest. Holes may be covered by your agreement, and that is a matter for the agreement and for whoever you rent from — not for this site.

The numbers this shape starts from

Wall to wall
commonly 11 by 14 ft
Ceiling
8 ft
Existing rod
often on or just above the frame, near 84 in
Existing window covering
usually a blind, sometimes corded

4 figures. These are typical for this shape, not measurements of your room.

What follows, rule by rule

All 6 rules, each landing somewhere different in this shape.

Rug Size to Room Size

rugs

Border arithmetic on 132 by 168 in gives a target of about 96 by 132 in. An 8 by 10 at 96 by 120 in matches on width and falls 12 in short on length, which is the closest fit this catalog manages to any room shape here.

Curtain Drop and Width

curtains

Measure the existing rod, not the ceiling. A rod on the frame in an 8 ft room can put rod-to-floor near 82 to 86 in, which is where an 84 in panel finally works. A rod near the ceiling puts it at 92 in and nothing here reaches.

Mirror Height and Placement

mirrors

Leaning becomes the default because hanging means holes. That makes anchoring the first question rather than an afterthought — a leaning mirror still needs to be secured wherever the manufacturer provides for it, and how that is done in a rental is a conversation with whoever you rent from.

Shelf Spacing and Load

floating shelves

The arithmetic is unchanged and the permission is not ours to give. Read your agreement about holes in walls. We give no legal advice on that and we will not guess at what your contract says.

Lamp Height to Seating

floor lamps

Outlet position decides lamp position more than seating does, and rentals often have one outlet per wall. Measure the cord route around the rug before choosing where the chair goes.

Night-Light Placement

night lights

A plug-in unit needs no permission and leaves no mark, which makes this the one category on the site where a rental is not a constraint at all. Do not use one in an outlet that is loose or damaged.

Catalog sizes against those ranges

5 listings whose stated figure can be put against the arithmetic for this shape. This is a comparison of numbers. It is not a claim that any of these suits your room, which depends on measurements only you have.

What does not fit

4 things this shape rules out, and why.

Any 84 in panel, if the existing rod is near the ceiling.
A rod at 92 in rod-to-floor leaves an 84 in panel 8 in short, and in a rental moving the rod means new holes, which is the thing you were trying to avoid.
Any 63 in panel, if the existing rod is 4 in or more above the frame.
The gap grows to about 20 in of bare wall under the hem. Sixty-three inches only works on a rod that is genuinely low.
Wall-hung shelves, where the agreement does not allow holes.
Not a sizing question at all. Read your agreement — this site has no view on what it permits and gives no legal advice about it.
A 5 by 7 rug in an 11 by 14 ft room.
The border target here is 96 by 132 in. Sixty by eighty-four inches sits well inside that, which means bare floor on all four sides wide enough to read as a gap rather than a border.
